A disabled man from Darlington has been arrested after he gave a lift to a friend on his mobility scooter while three times over the alcohol limit.

Nigel Lee Drummond was arrested after he was recorded by surveillance cameras weaving erratically through the streets of Darlington at 8mph after he and his friend left a local bar.

But because scooters do not count as cars under normal drink driving laws, Drummond was arrested under an obscure Victorian law – which bans being drunk in charge of a carriage.

Police warned that, while mobility scooters don’t go very fast, they can still pose a hazard to pedestrians and other road users. PC Kevin Salter of Darlington Police commented: ‘He was very drunk.’

Drummond was given a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £65 costs.

(MYFOX NATIONAL) – Sen. John Kerry’s daughter, Alexandra Forbes Kerry, was arrested in Los Angeles Thursday on suspicion of driving under the influence, police told Fox News.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Norma Eisenman said Forbes Kerry was released on $5,000 bail but did not release any other information.

TMZ.com cited police sources as saying Forbes Kerry, a 36-year-old film producer and director, was pulled over in Hollywood at 12:40 a.m. (PST) after allegedly violating a traffic law.

A formal blood alcohol test showed a reading of .06, TMZ.com said. The legal limit is .08 in California, but drivers under the limit can still be prosecuted for dangerous driving.

While Forbes Kerry was busted by police, another woman earlier this month busted herself by calling 911 to report her own drunk driving. Mary Strey of Granton, Wis., cited and charged with drunken driving and operating with a blood-alcohol level of 0.1 percent or more.

Lamas beat the media to the news of her DUI shame, by announcing the fact she had been arrested online before press organisations found out.

Toyota Motor said Monday it was developing anti-drunk driving equipment that would lock the ignition of a vehicle if high levels of alcohol are detected in the driver.

The system features a hand-held breathalyser, equipped with a digital camera, that detects alcohol consumption and photographs the driver’s face for identification, a company statement said.

If the driver tests positive, the system either warns him or her, or locks the vehicle’s ignition depending on the level of alcohol detected, Toyota said.

The carmaker is conducting tests with affiliate truck maker Hino Motors, and will install the equipment in selected trucks and other vehicles of fleet customers that include companies and government organisations.

The device will alert fleet administrators if the driver is detected with excessive alcohol levels, Toyota said.

Nissan Motor is currently developing similar equipment. In the United States, certain states earlier this year passed legislation requiring drunk driving offenders to install breathalyser ignition locks in their cars.

An actress who starred on the hit television series “Three’s Company” has been arrested in Southern California and cited for drunken driving.

Police say Joyce DeWitt, who played the character Janet Wood on the popular show, was pulled over Saturday afternoon after she drove past a barricade near a park in El Segundo.

Sgt. Danny Kim says an officer arrested the 60-year-old DeWitt after he observed signs she had been drinking and gave her field sobriety tests.

Kim says DeWitt was booked at the Police Department, cited and released on her own recognizance.

MIAMI —  A Miami television station and newspaper are reporting that blood tests show that Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth was driving drunk when he fatally struck a pedestrian last weekend.

WSVN-TV reported Thursday that unnamed sources with knowledge of the investigation say that Stallworth’s blood-alcohol level was between .08 and .16. The legal limit is .08. The Miami Herald also reported Thursday that an unnamed source says Stallworth’s blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit.

The Miami Beach Police Department is refusing to confirm the reports.

No charges have been filed against the 28-year-old Stallworth. Neither his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, nor his attorney, Robert Switke, returned calls from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Victim Mario Reyes died Saturday after being struck by Stallworth’s Bentley at 7 a.m. He had just finished an overnight shift at the Port of Miami and was walking to a bus stop.

The one eye drunk driving trick didn’t work for this lady, and the court didn’t agree with her defense… at all! And if you ever get pulled over for drunk driving, don’t try to argue that this works!

Last summer police received a tip about the woman’s erratic driving near Östernärke in central Sweden, reports the Nerikes Allehanda newspaper.

Upon catching up with the woman’s vehicle, which was swerving across all lanes, officers tried in vain with sirens and lights to get the woman to pull over.

After being followed for three kilometres, the woman finally stopped at the side of the road as officers pulled up alongside.

A breath test revealed the woman’s blood alcohol level was nearly ten times Sweden’s legal limit of 0.02 percent.

In pleading her case on the side of the road, the 56-year-old woman argued that her driving wasn’t affected because she’d been careful to keep one eye closed to prevent her from seeing double.

Unfortunately, the court saw right through her defence, and sentenced the woman to two months in prison for aggravated drunken driving.
